Networking session: Acupuncture adaptable to all settings (NWS-11)

Chairs: Mary Pender (Ireland), Kerry Fung (Hong Kong)

Session description

This session which will be hosted by Kerry Fung and Mary Pender will aim to bring about some discussion regarding adaptation of acupuncture techniques and acupuncture related techniques to different clinical settings, looking at the ideas behind acupuncture. This networking session will invite all of those who are interested in acupuncture.

We look at the treatment of people with for example,

  • cervicogenic headaches
  • tennis elbow
  • iliotibial band tightness

and how we may help practitioners in low-income countries, to use techniques which are acupuncture related. These may include, but are not limited to cupping, guasha, and acupressure.

We may discuss the feasibility of doing tutorials online with practitioners and perhaps helping them with case studies. Further discussion could link to finding sponsorship to facilitate their purchase and disposal of needles in low-income settings, once the practitioners in these settings could be trained to a level of expertise. Participant discussion regarding their unique circumstances in their own settings or countries is encouraged.

Specialty group

This networking session is organised by the International Acupuncture Association of Physiotherapy (IAAPT), a World Physiotherapy specialty group for physiotherapy associations, and individuals interested in the practice of acupuncture.
