Time zone

Japan is nine hours ahead of UTC. Japan is covered by a single time zone. There is no daylight saving time.

Weather

Generally, the weather in May will be warm and sunny. The average temperature in Tokyo in May could range from lows of 8.0°C (57.2°F) and highs of 22.9°C (73.2°F).

WiFi

There is usually free wifi in hotels, restaurants, and train stations. You can rent a mobile wifi device at the airport or use an international SIM card in your phone.

Drinking water

The tap water in Tokyo is safe to drink. There are an increasing number of drinking fountains available throughout the city.

Electricity

The standard power supply is 100 volts. The frequency is 50 Hz in Tokyo (Eastern Japan). The type of power outlet/connector is Type A, which has two parallel prongs. It is advised to bring a plug adapter for the use of electrical equipment.

Personal medicines

We recommend that you bring sufficient quantities of any medicines you take, even those you use less frequently, as overseas medicines and over-the-counter remedies are not sold in Japan.

Money

The official currency of Japan is the YEN (¥) and only the YEN is accepted when paying cash. ATMs that accept credit, debit and ATM cards issued outside Japan can be found in Haneda and Narita airport, post offices, 7-Eleven convenience stores, certain major Japanese banks. Major international credit cards are accepted in most stores.

Getting around

Tokyo has two international airports: Narita and Haneda. Both have convenient train connections to central Tokyo with travel times between 30 and 60 minutes. The Tokyo metro, with signage in Japanese and English, is very efficient and reliable. It is worth getting an online travel card (PASMO or SUICA) and top it up as needed.
